He underwent higher orthopaedic surgical training on the Oxford rotation. He is internationally Fellowship trained having completed two prestigious fellowships; one at Melbourne Orthopaedic Group, Australia and one at the Oxford University Hospitals Foot Ankle Service. He also completed a Fellowship in Bone Infection and Complex Limb Reconstruction at Oxford.

As a member of the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences, Mr Kendal’s interests include tendon disease, basic science, laboratory translation, and population studies. His research aim is to improve the care of patients with lower limb musculoskeletal disease. He uses big data analytical techniques to understand musculoskeletal pathology at a cellular level as well as the outcomes of surgical intervention at a national population level. He was the first to apply single cell genomics to human tendon, leading the way in advanced treatment options for patients.

At a national population level, Mr Kendal has led England population studies that define the safety and long-term outcomes of common foot and ankle procedures. These define benchmarks for the delivery of high-volume operations—such as hallux valgus surgery—providing evidence to support counselling, equitable access, service delivery, and quality improvement across the NHS. He has compared treatment pathways for end-stage ankle arthritis, generating real-world revision trajectories that inform shared decision-making when choosing between total ankle replacement and ankle fusion. His population based analysis on below-knee amputation in people with diabetes emphasises the unacceptably high rate of  post-operative mortality, re-intervention, and readmission in this vulnerable patient group.
